The Angels beat the Mariners 5-1 On July 7thwhile they continue to play better baseball going into the break. The win brought the Angels farther above the 500 mark to a 47-42 record. They did so with great pitching and strung together hits to get runner home.
The Angels on the day had ten hits that produced their 5 runs. Their big inning came in the bottom of the 3rdwhen they got 3 runners across the plate. This would turn out to be all they needed to get past the Mariners. The win gave pitcher Jered Weaver his 11thvictory of the season. He pitched great and has just 4 losses on the year.
Seattle continues to struggle and is now 2 games below 500 this season. Their record stands at 43-45 and they are just 18-22 away from home. In the game they managed just one run on 6 hits. The loss was credited to Doug Fister who has just 3 wins this season to 10 losses.
The Angels will face the Mariners again July 8that 10:05 PM ET. They will continue to try and build on getting further above the 500 mark. To do so, the Angels will send Ervin Santana to the mound against Seattle’s Blake Beaven. Santana is just 4-8 on the year despite an ok 3.89 ERA. Beaven has just one recorded win but is yet to lose and has a low 1.29 ERA. The Angels will also attempt to get farther above 500 as well. In games played at home they are 23-22 this year.
The Dodgers won in impressive fashion on July 7thto bring their record to 38-51 this year. The story of the day was a fantastic performance by pitcher Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw allowed only 5 scattered Met’s hits and was credited with his 9thwin of the year. Kershaw is the lone Dodger pitcher in terms of producing victories and being consistent this season. In the end, the Dodgers blanked the Mets 6-0
In all, the Dodgers got just one more hit than the Mets, but were able to string some hits together in the bottom of the 6thwhen they scored 5 runs.
Met’s pitcher Dillon Gee got just his 3rdloss of the year. Like Kershaw, he has also been a bright spot in the Met’s rotation and has 8 wins this year. The Mets were unable to give him any help offensively, however, getting just 6 hits. The loss dropped the Mets to 45-43 this season. They have been doing well in away ballparks with a 26-21 away record, but did not have what it took on this day.
The Dodgers will begin a home stand against the inner-state San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium July 8th at 10:10 PM ET. The Dodgers are set to start Chad Billingsley against the Padres Mat Latos. Billingsley is 7-7 this year with a 4.15 ERA. Latos has 5 wins to 9 losses this season and will bring a 4.26 ERA to the rubber Friday night.
