The Angels won 12-7 July 28th against the Detroit Tigers away. The win away from LA make the Angels away record a respectable 30-25 and move their overall record to 58 and 48 this season. They did so with impressive hitting streaks and big run innings throughout the ballgame and are in good position keeping pace in the division.
The Angels got 17 total hits on the day. One of those hits, was a Mark Trumbo homerun, which brought his total to 19 on the year. He also provided the team with an impressive 5 RBIs in the game. The Angels got 3 big innings in all on the day scoring 3 in the 2nd, 4 in the fourth, and 5 in the 7th. Pitcher Bobby Cassevah got credited with his first win of the year.
The Tigers 7 runs came off 13 total hits. They were able to get two homeruns on the day as well from Wilson Betemit and Miguel Cabrera. It was Betemit’s 4th homerun this season and Cabrera’s 22nd. It all proved to not be enough, as Detroit fell to 55-50 on the year. Pitcher Brad Penny was credited with the loss, his 8th of the year.
One day later, the tables turned as the Tigers beat up on the Angels 12-2 in front of a nice Detroit crowd. Both Squads are scratching to stay in their respective division races, and are proving to be evenly matched. The Tigers win improved their home record to 30-23 this season.
The Angels only managed 5 hits on the game as Detroits starter Porcello pitched a gem after giving up an early run in the top of the first. Angels Maicer Izturis was able to homer off of Porcello. The homerun was his 5th of the season. Angel’s pitcher Tyler Chatwood got credited with the loss, which dropped his record to 6-7 on the season. After the run early in the first, the angels were unable to muster up any offense. They stuck in the game, regardless, as their pitching was also effective until the 5th inning. They then gave up a run in that inning, 4 in the 6th, 2 in the 7th, and 4 in the 8th. The relief effort was anything but relieving and led to their demise.
The Tigers big innings came off a great offensive performance. In all, their 12 runs came off of 15 hits. One of the hits was a homerun by Brennan Boesch. It was his 15th of the year. Two Tigers, Guillen and Martinez, both got 4 RBIs to help lead Detroit to the big win. Porcello’s performance led him to his 11th win of the season as he continues to be an ace for the Tigers club.
The Angels now must save face and continue to look towards the future. They are in the race, but must keep pace as things will not get any easier for them schedule wise. The efforts of the pitching staff in this past game were especially eye-opening and need to improve if the Angels plan on getting to the playoffs.
