Jerry Rice is a name nearly every sports athlete and fan is familiar with. He played the majority of his career with the San Francisco 49ers and holds records in the NFL for receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2010, a spot well deserved and many consider him the greatest wide receiver in NFL history to this day. Now his son will get the chance to prove himself if he is as talented as his dad.
Jerry Rice Jr. is a wide receiver for the UCLA Bruins and he is getting his first playing time this Saturday against California. Rice has been on the practice team since joining the Bruins in 2009 and is finally getting a chance to show everybody what he can bring to the table. Rice is stepping in to fill in because of the fight that suspended four of their receivers against Arizona on Thursday night. Rice has played various members on the practice squad but now this is the real deal.
Rice said he was “overwhelmed”, “excited”, and “very nervous”. Maybe that is a good thing, maybe it is good he is not expecting to go out there and outperform everyone on the field. Rice just might be one of those cinderella stories where he goes and fills in for someone for a game, and then surprises everyone and ends up becoming a superstar. Who knows, maybe he will follow in his dads footsteps and end up being one of the greatest. We will see what Jerry Rice Jr. is made of this Saturday at the Rose Bowl.
