The Dodgers shut out the Padres July 9th, in odd fashion, to move their record to 40-51 on the season. The win came after the Dodgers went hitless through 8 innings of play. They finally broke up the no hitter pitched by Padres Luke Gregerson in the 9thinning to claim victory.
In the game, the dodgers struggled throughout and managed just 2 hits on the day. It proved to be enough though and the Dodgers were able to do just enough to walk-off with the victory. Pitcher Blake Hawksworth got credited with his second win of the season for the Dodgers.
San Diego was equally horrible from the plate and only mange a single hit the entire game. Luke Gregerson pitched wonderfully for the Padres and took a no-hitter into the 9thinning. It would have been the first no hitter ever for the Padres franchise, but was to good to be true. The Dodgers belted one over the reach of the Padres left fielder resulting in a double. That runner would then be hit in to give the Dodgers a 2 hit victory. The loss was Gregerson’s 2ndof the season. It also put the Padres record identical with the Dodgers at 40-51.
The two teams will play again on the 10that Dodger Stadium at 4:10 PM ET. Ted Lilly is set to start for the Dodgers while San Diego plans to send Tim Stauffer to the mound. Lilly has struggled mightily this year and is just 5-9 on the season with a 4.94 ERA. Stauffer has pitched well with a low 2.97 ERA, but has struggled to turn that success into wins. The Padres offense has not supported him well as he is just 5-5 on the year.
Across town, the Angels also won at home against the Mariners 9-3. The games biggest story line came from Torii Hunter who homered twice for the Angels propelling them to victory. The win for the Angels brings their record to 49-42 as they have begun to open things up collectively. It was also their 25thvictory this year while at home.
In all, the Angels got their 9 runs from 12 hits. The two homeruns by Hunter bring his season total to 11. Mark Trumbo also added his 16thhomerun of the season for the Angels as well. Pitcher Joel Piniero got credited with the victory moving his record to 5-3 this season.
The Mariners did not struggle hitting off the Angels pitching staff, but had difficulties getting runs across the plate. In all they too got 12 hits on the day, but just managed 3 runs. Pitcher Michael Pineda of the M’s struggled against the Angels and gave up a 4-run 3rdinning that ended up leading to his 6thloss of the year. The loss dropped the Mariners record to 43-47 this season.
The two teams will face off again July 10th at 3:35 PM ET in LA. LA is set to start pitcher Dan Haren against Seattle’s Felix Hernandez. Haren has been great fo rthe Angels this season and is searching for his tenth win of the year. He brings a 9-5 record to the mound with a low 2.65 ERA. Hernandez is 8-7 for Seattle with a 3.22 ERA.
