Both The Dodgers and Angels were display on the Fourth of July, but only one of the LA teams were able to add any fireworks of their own on the day. The Dodgers sputtered while the Angels were able to go yard twice to give hometown fans something to cheer about besides fireworks. The Angels win continues to keep them above 500 while the Dodgers continue to sputter both on and off the field.
The Dodgers fell to the Mets 5-2 on July 4thto slip further into baseball’s basement. The loss now gives the Dodgers a 37-49 record and they are just 19-25 at home. The game was close until the top of the 6thwhen the Mets got 3 runs, which would prove to be all it took to take down the Dodgers.
The Loss for the Dodgers was credited to Rubby De La Rosa who now is 3-4 on the year. In all the Dodgers got 2 runs on 7 hits, but the break down in pitching in the 6thultimately did them in.
The Mets improved their record to a game above 500 on the year at 43-42 and are 24-20 on the road this year. The Mets 5 runs came on 8 hits including the crucial 6thinning rally. Chris Capuano, of the Mets recorded his 8thwin of the year and Francisco Rodriguez closed the game to get his 21stsave of the year.
The two teams will meet again July 5that 10:10 PM ET at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers will be sending Ted Lilly to the mound while the Mets are set to start Mike Pelfrey. Lilly is 5-8 on the season with a 4.97 ERA. Pelfrey is 4-7 with a 4.92 ERA.
Across town, The Angels got two homeruns to power their way to a 5-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The win moved the Angels to 45-41 and evened up their home record to 21-21. LA had 9 hits total, two of which, were homeruns. Torii Hunter was able to hit his 9thof the year while Vernon wells collected his 12thhomerun of the season. Pitcher joel Pineiro got credit for his 4thwin of the season for the Angels as he pitched well and kept the Tigers off the base pads.
The loss for the Tigers brought their record to 45-41 for the year. They were only able to manage the one run from 5 total hits on the day. Tiger pitcher Charlie Furbush was dealt his second loss of the year and the Tigers continue to struggle away from home where they are just 18-22.
The two Teams will meet again July 5th at 10:05 PM ET in LA. The Angels are set to put Dan Haren on the mound to pitch. Haren is 8-5 this season and has an impressive 2.85 earned run average. Detroit will have pitcher Jason Verlander toeing the rubber. Verlander has been unstoppable this season and holds an 11-3 record. He has one of the lowest ERAs in the league, to boot, at 2.32.
